Self Assessment on my Video- mediated Reflective Micro Lesson III

Topic                     : Vocabulary: Words related to Family

Level of learners  : Intermediate

Class size              : 06

The third phase of the workshop was a special one for all of us because it was a workshop that was organized in the physical atmosphere when the rest of the world has been attending online seminars and webinars. Attending the workshop in a very systematic manner by following all the measures of COVID- 19 gave us a feeling of contentment. Thanks to the organizers for their preparations.

As a part of Video Mediated Reflective Micro Teaching (VMRMT) Phase-III, I have chosen Vocabulary (words related to family) as my micro lesson.  Keeping in view of my past lessons and the feedback on them, I have planned my micro lesson well. I wanted to stick to the time and wanted to limit myself to a single skill.  For this, I have picked some seven vocabulary items to be taught in my class. To teach them in an interesting way, I have chosen various pictures related to movies. I was very keen in selecting the pictures that would suit the choice of vocabulary. My aim during my class was to make my students learn the selected items of vocabulary. I wanted my class to be interactive and engaged. Further, I wanted to allow some time to reinforcement and finally conduct an activity.

I was able to handle the class well by materializing my lesson plan. I believe that I made a sincere attempt in taking care of all the instructions (lead-in, introducing the learning item, practice, reinforcement and assignment) given by our Director, ELT Centre of Gudlavalleru Engineering College.

But, later, when I happened to see my video and the feedback given by our Mentor, Dr Ramanujam, Director, ELT Centre and the observers Mr G Raja Kumar and P Paul Francis I found that there were some notable lapses in my micro lesson: a. I have exceeded the time that I was allotted, b. The choice and Organization of the vocabulary items, c. Unnecessary usage of phonemic transcription, d. over-enthusiasm at a few instances, e. wasn’t able to conduct a challenging activity, but, it was moreover a repetition of the practice exercise.

Feedback by the Observers
  •  I was active throughout the class and kept my students engaged.
  • I mustn’t  have used phonemic transcription for all these words
  • I was able to begin my class successfully and the transition of the vocabulary items was planed better.
  •  I was able to manage my class better.
  •  The activity after the class was a repetition of the exercise that I conducted during the session.

 My Action plan for improvement:
  • I would take extra care in preparing the tasks for the students.
  • I would make sure that I answer all the questions raised by the students.
  • I will plan my class within the time that is allotted to me.
  • I would overcome the minor mistakes that I have made in this phase of  micro lesson.

Self Assessment on my Video- mediated Reflective Micro Lesson II

Topic                   : By/With

Level of learners: Intermediate

Class size            : 07

My video mediated micro lesson - 2 has helped me to analyze the way I dealt with the lesson. I believe that I was able to overcome some of the errors that I made in my first Video-mediated Reflective Micro lesson (VMRMT). It gave me contentment, however, leaving a few lapses behind.
Initially, before the start of my micro lesson I had a determination to adhere to the principles that were instructed by our professor. I chose a single skill to be taught and I didn’t want to introduce my lesson abruptly, but, with a small question/anecdote/riddle. Moreover, I wanted to plan my lesson that would not go beyond ten minutes.
At first, I started my session with a small riddle and later introduced my lesson to the students. I told them how confusing prepositions are at times, especially, ‘by’ and ‘with’.  I gave them as many examples as possible. I also elicited some information from the students, and that initially helped me to engage a student – centered class.
Secondly, I planned a variety of activities to teach the single skill to the students. First, I made them repeat the rule that I had taught in the class and asked them to give examples on the point that I taught them. To my amusement, the students gave numerous answers and responded enthusiastically. Secondly, I took a picture of a ‘Dog’ and asked them a few questions on the picture, and they answered with ease. Next, I took out a box containing a few objects and conducted an activity.
Next, one of the negative aspects of my Micro lesson was that it exceeded the intended duration of 10 minutes and went on for 13 minutes and 30 seconds. I suppose the classroom dynamics led me to exceed the time limit. While it contributed to a much great interaction than I had expected, I should be careful not to exceed the time limit when I teach a micro lesson next time.

My Strengths:
  • Learning from the failures of my earlier micro lesson and strengthening the effective aspects of my teaching.
  • Creating interaction through a variety of activities.
  • Being able to make my lesson engaging.

My Plan of Action
·         Plan well for a micro teaching lesson keeping the topic and time in top priority.
·         The activities/ exercises chosen to achieve the objectivities should be even more effective.
·         Make the classroom more interactive.
·         Make sure that there is smooth transition between the activities conducted.

My first microlesson on "Comma"

Self Assessment on my Video mediated Micro Lesson

Topic                   : Comma
Level of learners: Intermediate
Class size            : 06

My video mediated micro lesson has helped me to measure my strengths and weaknesses in a great extent. It has showcased my abilities and shortcomings in a clear way.
Firstly, I started giving good examples to introduce the punctuation mark ‘Comma’ in a detailed manner. I also elicited some information from the students, and that initially helped me to engage the class student – centered. But, slowly the class turned to be a teacher – centered one. The amount of the teacher talk and the student talk was inappropriate.
Secondly, I wanted to choose the topic ‘Comma in a Clause’ but I was not precise. I started giving many examples and I also gave six rules of the usage of a ‘Comma’ and then shifted to Comma in a Clause, which brought some confusion among the students. The professor has rightly pointed that my lesson was good but the strategy was not, besides that, my micro teaching lesson was like a combination of two microteaching lessons.
Next, my Micro teaching is supposed to be a 10 minute lecture but it went on for 20 minutes. I must have planned my lesson in a meticulously way with a neat plan and execution. Moreover, a decent activity would have been very helpful.
My Plan of Action
I have many things to do. Besides learning from mistakes, I should
  •  Plan well for a micro teaching lesson keeping the topic and time in top priority.
  • Introduce exercises and activities in contexts.
  •  The activities/ exercises chosen to achieve the objectives should be effective.
  • Make the classroom more interactive.
  • Allot time for activities and there must be smooth transition between them.
